MEN'S SOCCER (3-1, 0-1)
The 10th-ranked men's soccer team posted a 1-1 record last week dropping
its BIG EAST opener to St. John's, 6-2, but coming back and defeating Drexel,
3-2. The Pirates finish the week with a record of 3-1 overall and
0-1 in BIG EAST play.
On Sunday (Sept. 15), Kobie Johnson (Princeton Junction, NJ) scored
the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lift the Pirates over Drexel,
3-2. The Pirates erased a 1-0 deficit at 38:31 when Jeff Rigby (Turnersville,
NJ) converted a corner kick from Luke Serafin (Piscataway, NJ). Peter
Scavo (Raritan, NJ) scored the Pirates' second goal early in the second
half. Goalkeeper Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) had seven saves on
the day.
The Pirates suffered their first loss of the season dropping a 6-2
decision to BIG EAST rival St. John's on Wednesday (Sept. 9). Trailing
1-0, freshman Gregory Strohmann (Weirheim, Germany) scored on an assist
from junior A.J Panas (Budd Lake, NJ) at the 16:00 mark and scored from
two yards out to tie the match at 1-1. The Pirates then took at 2-1
lead when freshman Brian Ruth (Oakdale, NY), making his first collegiate
start, finished a feed from junior Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ). It was the
first collegiate tally for Ruth.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall returns home for two BIG EAST
matches against Georgetown on Friday (Sept. 18) at 3:00 p.m. and West Virginia
on Sunday (Sept. 20) at 1:00 p.m. Both matches take place on Owen
T. Carroll Field.
WOMEN'S SOCCER (3-0-1, 1-0-1)
The women's soccer team defeated Monmouth, 2-1 and played to
a scoreless tie against Boston College last week. The Pirates end
the week with a 3-0-1 overall record and 1-0-1 in BIG EAST competition.
On Sunday (Sept. 13), goalie Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) had
nine saves en route to her first shutout of the season as the Pirates and
Eagles played to a scoreless tie.
The Pirates defeated intra-state rival Monmouth, 2-1, on Wednesday
(Sept. 9). Michelle Tacey (Wethersfield, CT) scored the game-winner
from a Kelly Smith (Garston Watford Herts, England) assist with 4:20 remaining
in the match. Christina Bartlett (Arlington, VA) scored the Pirates'
first goal at 43:09. It marked the first career goals for Bartlett
and Tacey. Nagle had five saves in the match.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall continues its five-game road trip on Friday (Sept. 18) at Georgetown, 3:30 p.m. The Pirates move on to West Virginia on Sunday (Sept. 20), for a 3:00 p.m. match.
VOLLEYBALL (4-3, 0-0)
The women's volleyball team posted a 3-1 record last week with
wins over Drexel (3-0), Coppin State (3-0) and Radford (3-0), and a 3-0
loss to Virginia Tech. The Pirates finished the week with a 4-3 overall
record.
The Pirates captured two matches at the Virginia Tech Invitational
held Friday-Saturday (Sept. 11-12). Seton Hall didn't allow Coppin
State to score a point the match, winning all three games by 15-0.
Freshman Paige Ellerston (Mt. Holly Springs, PA/Carlisle) led the way with
five kills while sophomore Kadri Kruus (Tallinn, Estonia) had 13 assists
and nine service aces.
Seton Hall defeated Radford by scores of 15-11, 15-7 and 15-13
on Saturday (Sept. 12). Senior Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick,
MD/Calvert) led all players with 21 kills. Kruus finished the match
with a team-high 33 assists and 12 digs.
The Pirates dropped a 3-0 decision to host Virginia Tech on Saturday
(Sept. 12). Ellertson and Woodford led the team with seven kills apiece,
while Kruus added six kills, 17 assists and 10 digs.
On Tuesday (Sept. 8) the Pirates won their home opener, defeating
Drexel, 3-0 (15-13, 15-12, 15-7). Kruus collected 10 kills, a match-high
39 assists and 12 kills. Senior middle blocker Renee Powell (Lincoln Park,
MI/Lincoln Park) ended the match with 10 kills in 27 attempts and 18 digs.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall begins a four-match homestand taking on Marist on Tuesday (Sept. 15) at 7:00 p.m., then facing St. Peter's on Friday (Sept. 18) at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the Seton Hall University Tournament. The tournament continues on Saturday (Sept. 19) when the Pirates take on Iona at 2:00 p.m.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The men's and women's cross-country teams competed in the Lafayette
Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 12). The men's team notched a sixth
place finish while the women finished 11th overall.
Senior Anthony DeBenedictis (Roselle Park, NJ) captured first
place, running the course in 25:32.
Sophomore Michelle Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) was the women's
top finisher at 45th place. She ran the course in a time of 20:28.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall travels to the Monmouth Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 19).
GOLF
The Seton Hall golf team captured the championship at the 8th
Annual Seton Hall Pirate Invitational, held Saturday-Sunday (Sept. 12-13)
at Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson, NJ. It marked the first-ever
championship by the Pirates in their tournament.
The Pirates, who trailed Penn State by eight strokes after the
first day, shot a tournament-best 295 in the second round to finish eight
strokes ahead of the second-place Nittany Lions. Mike Costigan (London,
Ontario) was the individual champion, shooting a 75 and an even par 72
in the second round. Clark Topping (Hyattsville, MD) also an even-par
72 on the final day of competition to take 4th place overall. Scott
Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA) shot a 75 on the final day, and finished in a tie
for 7th place.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall competes in the Georgetown Hoya Invitational held Saturday-Sunday (Sept. 19-20).
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The women's tennis team kicked off the 1998 fall season at the
Cornell Invitational in Cornell, NY on Saturday-Sunday (Sept. 12-13).
On the first day of competition, sophomore Pille Arike (Tallinn,
Estonia) defeated Davidson's Carolyn Zakrevsky, 6-1, 6-2 in Flight B singles.
Arike, with junior partner Laura McCracken (Greystones, Ireland) also earned
a Flight A doubles win over Davidson's Dana Casner and Amber Branford,
8-5.
On the event's second day of competition, the Pirates took two
Flight A singles matches from Army. McCracken defeated Annie
Weber, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 while freshman Jasmine Wolcott earned a win over Cheryl
Hamilton, 6-2, 6-1.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall travels to Syracuse, NY, for
the Cissie Leary Invitational.
