MEN'S SOCCER (5-1, 2-1)
The 24th-ranked men's soccer team swept of pair of BIG EAST home matches
last weekend. The Pirates defeated Georgetown, 3-2, in overtime and
West Virginia, 3-2. The Pirates finish the week with a record of
5-1 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play.
On Friday (Sept. 18) junior Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ) scored off a feed
from freshman Gregory Strohmann (Weirheim, Germany) in the 108th minute
to break a 2-2 tie and propel Seton Hall to the 3-2 double-overtime win
over previously undefeated 9th-ranked Georgetown. Seton Hall and Georgetown
battled through a scoreless first overtime before Scavo scored the game-winner.
Seton Hall dominated play through the initial 30 minutes, taking a 1-0
lead on a goal at the 32:56 mark as Strohmann scored on a feed from Scavo.
Georgetown then rallied back with two goals, as Eric Kvello scored twice
to give Georgetown a 2-1 lead. Strohmann scored his second goal of
the match with Jeff Rigby (Turnersville, NJ) assisting to tie the score
at 2-2. Senior goalkeeper Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) turned away
seven shots.
On Sunday (Sept. 20), Scavo scored on a penalty kick to break a 2-2 tie
and propel Seton Hall to a 3-2 victory over West Virginia. The Pirates
got on the board first, as Scavo scored his first goal of the game at the
10:35 mark from Rigby. After the Mountaineers tied the match, the
Pirates reclaimed a 2-1 lead, as Strohmann scored on a feed from Scavo
and Rigby. West Virginia tied the match once again, 2-2, and remained knotted
when Strohmann broke away and dribbled into the box. He was hauled
down by a West Virginia defender, setting up the game-winning penalty kick
by Scavo, his second tally of the day. Rigby finished with two assists.
Martin continued his solid net play, stopping four shots.
Next for Men's Soccer: The Pirates travel to Princeton for a 7:30
p.m. match against the Tigers on Wednesday (Sept. 23). Seton Hall
hosts St. Peter's on Saturday (Sept. 26) at Owen T. Carroll Field. Game
time is 1:00 p.m.

The Pirates end the week with a 4-1-1 overall record and 2-1-1 in BIG EAST competition. On Sunday (Sept. 20) the Pirates suffered their first loss of the season dropping a 3-2 decision to West Virginia in Morgantown. West Virginia scored first at the 29:20 mark before the Pirates rallied back to tie the match 1-1, when freshman Brigid Sullivan (Philadelphia, PA) scored her first collegiate goal. The Pirates then went ahead, 2-1, as Kelly Smith (Garston Watford Herts, England) and freshman Jen Langlois (Charlton, MA) assisted on a breakaway goal by senior Courtney Wood (Neptune, NJ). The Mountaineers scored two-second half goals to seal the victory with a penalty kick proving to be the game-winner. Senior goalkeeper Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) had 11 saves for the Pirates. On Friday (Sept. 18), the Pirate shut out BIG EAST rival Georgetown, 3-0. Langlois put the Pirates on the board at 43:50 with Leslie Smith (Mounds View, MN) assisting. Kelly Smith scored at the 52:46 mark and Wood closed out the Pirates' scoring at 66:38. Goalkeeper Nagle, with three saves, notched her second shutout of the season.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates continue their road trip with a 3:30 p.m. match at Lafayette on Wednesday (Sept. 23). Seton Hall continues on to Syracuse for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday (Sept. 27).

September 2 Villanova W 4-1 7 LaSalle W 2-1 9 Monmouth W 2-1 13 at Boston College T 0-0 18 at Georgetown W 3-0 20 at West Virginia L 2-3 VOLLEYBALL (4-3, 0-0) The women's volleyball team posted a 2-1 record last week with wins over Marist (3-0) and Iona (3-0), but dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Peter's. The Pirates finished the week with a 6-4 overall record. Seton Hall defeated Iona on the second day of competition in the SHU Tourney, held Friday-Saturday (Sept. 18-19) in Walsh Gymnasium by scores of 15-9, 15-7, 17-15. Senior Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) led the team with 15 kills in 25 attempts and 12 digs, while senior Leslie Schipper (Kalamazoo, MI) chipped in with 11 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Junior setter Kadri Kruus (Tallin, Estonia) collected a team-high 42 assists. In the opening match on Friday (Sept. 19), St. Peter's defeated Seton Hall by a score of 3-1. St. Peter's won the opening game 15-12, but the Pirates bounced back to take game two by the score of 15-1. The Peacocks rallied back, however, to capture the next two games (15-4, 15-3) to win the match. Lozanski led St. Peter's with 13 kills, while Carothers had 34 assists. For Seton Hall, senior Renee Powell (Lincoln Park, MI) led the team with 10 kills in 19 attempts. Kruus added 29 assist, while Woodford picked up a match-high 15 digs. The Pirates posted a 3-0 victory over Marist on Tuesday (Sept. 8). NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday (Sept. 22) at Walsh Gym. MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The men's cross country team, behind the first-place finish of senior Anthony DeBenedictis (Roselle Park, NJ), placed third at the Fourth Annual Monmouth University Cross Country Invitational, held at Tatum Park in Middletown, NJ, on Saturday (Sept. 19). DeBenedictis raced to the individual championship with a time of 25:12, breaking the meet record of 26:55, set in 1997 by Lehigh's Steve Gourley. Brad Barket (Dallas, PA) and David Lawler (Lynnfield, MA) were the next two Pirate finishers, racing to 21st and 22nd place with times of 5:40 and 5:41, respectively.
The women's cross country team placed fourth. Sophomore Michelle Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) was the top finisher for the Pirates, racing to a 6:34 finish over the 5000-meter course, good for 10th place. Marissa DeFreese (Rahway, NJ) placed 19th with a time of 6:43.

GOLF
The men's golf team placed third at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational held at Lansdowne Resort this past weekend. The Pirates shot 288-292 to finish at 580, four over par. Georgetown won the tournament with a score of 573, while East Carolina took second with 578.
Junior Clark Topping (Hyattsville, MD) was the top Pirate finisher, firing a 71-70 to finish in third place at three-under. Senior Mike Costigan (London, Ontario) finished tied for seventh at one-under par 143. Junior Scott Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA) finished in 19th place. The Pirates trailed first-place Georgetown by five strokes (283-288) after the opening round, played on Saturday (Sept. 19).
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall competes in the Liberty/Seatrail Fall Classic held Saturday-Sunday (Sept. 28-29).

The men's tennis team defeated Monmouth University, 6-1, on Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Ivy Hill Tennis Complex.
Alex Militec (Belgrad, Yugoslavia) defeated Kurt Anderson, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Mark Vanderelst (Hamilton, Ontario) captured the No. 3 singles over Jasun Gindi, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, senior Lou Castelli (Maplewood, NJ) defeated Andrew Katz, 6-0, 6-2.
