MEN'S SOCCER (2-0, 0-0)
The men's soccer team opened the 1998 season with a 2-1 upset over
the fifth ranked Maryland Terps. The Pirates finished the week with
a 2-1 victory over Adelphi to post a 2-0 season-opening record.
On September 1, junior forward Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ) scored
on a feed from freshman forward Greg Strohmann (Weirheim, Germany) 3:46
into the first overtime period to break a 1-1 tie and propel the Pirates
to the upset of Maryland. It marked Scavo's second goal of the match.
Senior goalkeeper Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) had eight saves for the
Pirates.
Freshmen Hakim Fobia (Voorhees, NJ) and Jan Rickel (Bingen, Germany)
scored first-half goals to lead Seton Hall past Adelphi, on September 5.
Both goals were the first collegiate scores for either player. The
Pirates outshot the Panthers 14-11 and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Martin made two saves in goal for his second win of the season.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (2-0, 1-0)
The women's soccer team began the 1998 season with victories
over Villanova (4-1) and LaSalle (2-1). The Pirates are 2-0 overall
and 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play.
BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Kelly Smith (Garston Watford
Herts, England) scored three first-half goals and assisted on another to
lead Seton Hall to the 4-1 season-opening win over Villanova September
2. Freshman Jen Langlois (Charlton, MA) netted her first career goal
and also recorded an assist in the win. Seton Hall goalkeeper Stacey Nagle
(Macungie, PA) made seven saves on the day.
On Monday, September 7, Smith scored two first-half goals to
lead the Pirates over LaSalle, in a match shortened to 70 minutes because
of rain and lightning. Leslie Smith (Mounds View, MN) assisted on Smith's
first goal.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall hosts Monmouth Wednesday, September 9 at 3 p.m., then travel to Boston College for a noon match on Sunday, September 13.
VOLLEYBALL (1-2, 0-0)
The women's volleyball team opened the 1998 season in Fairfield
at the ECAC Invitational where the Pirates placed third. They finished
the weekend with a 1-2 record and had two players named to the All-Tournament
Team. Junior setter Kadri Kruus (Tallin, Estonia) and senior outside
hitter Jacki Woodford (Prince Frederick, MD) were honored as members of
the All-Tournament Team.
On September 4, the Pirates fell to Northeastern University,
3-2. Woodford led the Pirates with 15 kills in 46 attempts and 17
digs, while Kruus recorded a "triple-double" with 10 kills (no errors),
39 assists and 24 digs. Freshman Paige Ellertson (Mount Holly Springs,
PA) enjoyed a fine collegiate debut, tallying 12 kills with only one error
in 24 attempts for a .458 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter
Leslie Schipper (Kalamazoo, MI) added 13 kills.
On September 5, the Pirates opened the day with a 3-0 (15-5,
15-4, 15-6) win over Central Connecticut State. Senior Renee Powell
(Lincoln Park, MI) led the team with nine kills and a .500 hitting percentage,
while Kruus recorded seven kills, 23 assists and 12 digs. Ellertson
led the team with 17 digs. Junior Jennifer Mumby (Chelmsford, MA)
served five aces, including four in a row, and contributed seven kills.
Overall, the Pirates hit .304 as a team.
In the final match of the Invitational, Seton Hall squared off
with undefeated Fairfield University. After dropping the opening
game 4-15, the Pirates rallied back with a 15-9 win to even the match at
1-1. Fairfield rallied to capture the next two games (12-15, 10-15) to
seal the win. Woodford led the team with 13 kills in 33 attempts,
while Mumby contributed 10. Senior middle blocker Julie Birchler (Fairfield,
NJ) sparked the team off the bench with seven kills and a match-high 31
digs.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall's home season opens on Tuesday, September 7, with a 7:00 p.m. match against Drexel in Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates then travel to the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday-Saturday, September 11-12.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The men's and women's cross-country teams opened the 1998 campaign
at the William Paterson Invitational held Saturday, September 5 at Garrett
Mountain.
The women's team finished third, led by seniors Michelle Henry
(Scarborough, Ontario) and Charmaine Schmidt (Washington, DC). Henry
completed the course in a time of 20:47 while Schmidt clocked a time of
21:12.
The men's team, behind the performances of senior Ned Brooks
(North Babylon, NY) and junior David Lawler (Lynnfield, MA), finished second
overall. Brooks posted a time of 28:27, while Lawler finished in
28:56.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall travels to Easton, PA, for the Lafayette Invitational, Saturday, September 12.
GOLF
The Seton Hall golf team opens the 1998 season, Saturday and
Sunday, September 12 and 13 when it hosts the Seton Hall Pirate Invitational
at Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson, NJ.
MEN'S TENNIS
The men's tennis team opens up the 1998 fall season Saturday
and Sunday, September 12-13 at the Bloomsburg Invitational. Matches
begin at 9:00 a.m.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The women's tennis team begins the 1998 fall season on Saturday-Sunday,
September 12-13 at the Cornell.
