MOOSIC, PA (May 20, 2000) - The Seton Hall golf team shot a 628 after two rounds at the NCAA East Regional, but did not make the final round cut, finishing 24th out of 27 teams. The Pirates were in 15th place with a first-round total of 303, but shot a 325 over two days of a rain-soaked second round at the Glenmaura National Golf Course.
The NCAA Tournament Committee found it necessary to cut six teams form the field in order to give the teams in contention the best possible chance to complete the final round due to weather factors.
Junior Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ/Bergen Catholic) was the highest finisher for the Pirates, shooting a 151 (72-79) tying him for 46th place. Freshman Justin Van Hyning ( Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) shot a 156 (78-78), tied for 82nd place, while senior Scott Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) finished tied for 95th with a two-round score of 157 (73-84).
Clemson University won the championship with a three-round total of 871. Seton Hall's officially "Did Not Finish".
This was the third straight year the Pirates competed at the East Regional. Seton Hall made it this year with its team victory at the BIG EAST Championship April 30.
