INDIANAPOLIS, IN - For the fourth consecutive year, the Seton Hall men's golf team, under the direction of second-year head coach Clark Holle, has been selected to the NCAA East Regional. The Pirates begin first-round play at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, VA, from May 17-19. The region features 27 teams from Districts 1, 2, 3 North and South and additional at-large teams. Seton Hall was ranked at the fourth team from District 2.
It is no coincidence that Seton Hall's four NCAA berths have corresponded with the collegiate career of current senior Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ). Smith, named Seton Hall's Co-Male Athlete of the Year this season, has had another impressive year. Seton Hall is coming off a sixth-place finish at the 2001 BIG EAST Championship on April 29.
In 2000, Seton Hall was at Moosic, PA, where the Pirates did not finish due to inclement weather. Smith led the team with a two-round total of 151. In 1999 at Barrington, RI, Smith again led the Pirates to a 17th-place finish, shooting a 220. In 1998, at Hilton Head, SC, the team finished 21st.
There are 421 total participants at the three regional sites, with the top 156 advancing to the Division I NCAA Championship May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, NC.
Joining Smith at the 2001 East Regional for Seton Hall are senior Drew McMahon (Little Falls, NJ), junior Brian McGowan (Cresskill, NJ), sophomore Justin Van Hyning (Bordentown, NJ) and freshman Jay Allaghi (Franklin Lakes, NJ).
