Golf Finishes Eighth at Navy Invitational; Eugene Smith Wins Title

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Sept. 10, 2000) - Trailing by one stroke after the first round, senior Eugene Smith (Glen Ridge, NJ) shot a three under par 68 in the second round on September 10th to win the individual title and lead the golf team to an eighth place finish at the Navy Invitational.

Smith finished with 138 total strokes, one stroke ahead of Rollins' Jeff Walker for the fifth victory of his collegiate career.

The Pirates finished with 593 total strokes, 16 strokes behind first place finisher University of Richmond.

Junior Brian McGowan (Cresskill, NJ) was second on the Pirates, tying for 42nd place shooting 75-75-150.

Junior Dennis Bosworth (West Orange, NJ), sophomore Justin Van Hyning (Bordentown, NJ), and freshman Jay Allaghi (Franklin Lakes, NJ) finished within one stroke of each other. Bosworth scored a 77-76-153, tied for 58th. Van Hyning scored a 74-80-154, tied for 65th, and Allaghi scored a 76-79-155,tied for 70th.

The Pirates return to action next Saturday, Sept. 16, as they compete in the James Madison University Invitational.
