EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Seton Hall golf team that won the 2000 BIG EAST Tournament received their championship rings in a half-time ceremony during the Seton Hall/Georgetown men's basketball game on Jan. 15.
The title-winning squad was joined by members of the current golf team as well as former team members from past years.
The championship is the golf team's first since 1992 and only the second overall in the program's history. It is Seton Hall's first BIG EAST crown in any sport since the women's track & field team won the 1994 BIG EAST Indoor title.
The Pirates set a tournament record by shooting a 580 for the two-day tournament while finishing 11 strokes ahead of second-place Rutgers for the title.
Eugene Smith tied the conference record for 36 holes, shooting a 69-72-141 for the tournament. Smith became the first individual champion in school history.
Head coach Clark Holle was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year in only his first year at the helm.
The golf team begins the 2001 spring season on Feb. 16-18 in Pensacola, FL for the Emerald Coast Collegiate.
