Volleyball Sweeps Stony Brook For Second-Straight Win

Freshman Breanna Leisner had 11 kills and five digs against Stony Brook.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) on Thursday led the Seton Hall volleyball team to a sweep of Stony Brook in Walsh Gym. The win, which was the Pirates’ second in a row, improved Seton Hall’s overall record to 9-11, while Stony Brook fell to 7-12. With the victory, Seton Hall has already totaled its win total from a year ago. The 2004 Pirates did not achieve their ninth win until Nov. 3.

Procuniar finished the match with a team-high 12 kills, on .391 hitting, also tallying seven digs. Leisner had 11 kills and five digs. Junior Jessica King (Midland, Ontario) netted nine kills to go along with six blocks. Senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.) also had nine kills.

Freshmen Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) once again turned in solid performances. Meyers finished the match with eight kills and six digs, Rahrer had 45 assists.

The Pirates won game one, 30-25, and game three, 30-21, but the Seawolves almost took game two, with Seton Hall prevailing, 33-31. Stony Brook had game-point, and a 29-27 lead, but the Pirates staved off elimination on a kill from Meyers and an attacking error on the Seawolves’ Morgan Sweany, to tie the game, 29-29.

Stony Brook took the next point, but another attacking error on Sweany tied the score once again, 30-30. Seton Hall finally regained the advantage thanks to a Leisner kill, but after Stony Brook tied the score once more, the Pirates pulled out the win on back-to-back kills from Scholl and King.

Seton Hall had a team attacking percentage of .327 in the match, while the Seawolves hit .241, committing 19 attacking errors.

Seton Hall concludes its seven-match home-stand this Sunday, Oct. 16, when it hosts St. Francis (Pa.) in Walsh Gym at 2:00 p.m.
