Volleyball Earns Fourth-Straight Win with Sweep of Iona

Freshman Breanna Leisner on Wednesday had a double-double, with 14 kills and 10 digs.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Seton Hall volleyball team on Wednesday pulled its overall record back up to .500, with a sweep of the Iona Gaels in the Mulcahy Center. Three Pirates recorded double-digit kills, and the team now stands at 11-11 as it prepares to restart BIG EAST play this Friday. With the loss, the Gaels fell to 7-15.

Freshman Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) led Seton Hall, earning the third double-double of her career, finishing the match with 14 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed 11 kills of her own, and junior Jessica King (Midland, Ontario) tallied 10, committing no attacking errors, to finish with a .526 attacking percentage. As a team, Seton Hall hit .333.

Also for the Pirates, freshman setter Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had 42 assists and 10 digs, junior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) netted a team-high 13 digs, and senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.) finished the match with five kills and seven blocks.

Seton Hall took game one of the match, 30-23, using a big scoring-run in the middle of the game to secure the win. Leading, 12-10, the Pirates stormed to a 23-14 lead and never looked back. Game two was much more competitive, but Seton Hall prevailed, 30-25. The second game was tied late, but from the point the score was 24-24, the Pirates earned the victory with a 6-1 scoring-run, seeing King tally three kills during that stretch.

In game three, Seton Hall held a 25-20 lead before the Gaels mounted a come-back, cutting the Pirate lead to just one, 28-27. But, Seton Hall managed to hold of Iona’s late charge with a pair of kills from Leisner and King, to win, 30-27.

For Iona, Miki Hogg had a match-high 18 kills with a .517 attacking percentage, and Kristin Allain was the only other Gael to tally double-digit kills, with 11. Iona had a team-hitting percentage of .242.

Seton Hall returns to action this Friday, Oct. 21, when it hosts Rutgers in Walsh Gym at 7:00 p.m.
