Volleyball's Five-Match Winning Streak Snapped by Villanova

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped by the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday in Walsh Gym. The 3-1 loss drops the Pirates’ overall record to 12-12, and the team falls to 2-6 in the BIG EAST. With the win, Villanova improves to 18-5 overall, 6-2 in the BIG EAST.

Seton Hall had four players reach double-digits in kills. Junior Jessica King (Midland, Ontario) led the team with 15 kills and freshman Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) narrowly missed what would have been her third-straight double-double, tallying 14 kills and nine digs. Senior Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) both totaled 12 kills.

Also for the Pirates, freshman setter Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) continued her solid play, netting 51 assists and recording six digs, senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.) had five kills and a match-high six blocks, and junior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) led Seton Hall with 11 digs.

Villanova’s Alona Cherkez finished with a match-high in kills, 22, and digs, 18, to finish with a double-double. The Wildcats’ Adrian Semrau had 18 kills and Celine Nguyen compiled 17. Setter Jenna Link tallied 62 assists. Villanova totaled 77 kills to hit .327 as a team.

Seton Hall trailed for much of game one of the match, but rallied late to pull within one point, 29-28. Villanova ended the Pirates’ hopes of a come-back on a kill from Cherkez, to win the game, 30-28. Seton Hall rebounded to win game two, 30-24, riding a fast start to the victory. The Pirates opened up a 12-4 lead early in the game, and held off a late Wildcat rally to seal the win.

Villanova won game three, 30-23. The game was close early on, tied 15-15, but the Wildcats earned the win on steady play down the stretch. In game four, Seton Hall recovered from an early 12-6 deficit, to come within one point, 16-15, but like game three, Villanova controlled from the midway point, and won, 30-20.

The Pirates return to action next Friday, Oct. 28, when they will travel to Pittsburgh for a 7:00 p.m. match.
