Volleyball Falls at Pittsburgh, 3-0

Junior Jessica King had a team-high 12 kills against Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Seton Hall volleyball team was swept by Pittsburgh in Fitzgerald Field House on Friday. Junior outside hitter Jessica King (Midland, Ontario) was the only Pirate player to record double-digit kills, finishing the match with 12. The loss drops Seton Hall’s overall record to 12-13, and 2-7 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh improves to 14-9, 7-3 in the BIG EAST.

Other top performers for Seton Hall were senior Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who had nine kills and a team-high four blocks, freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio), finishing the match with seven kills, senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.), tallying six kills, and freshman Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.), netting five kills and seven digs.

The Panthers had three players record at least 15 kills and hit over .300. Gini Ullery had a match-high 19 kills, hitting .421, Diana Andreyko notched 17 kills, hitting .333, and Ashley White tallied 15 kills, on .500 hitting. As a team, Pittsburgh finished the match with a .338 hitting percentage, the highest against Seton Hall since Louisville hit .377 in its sweep of the Pirates on Oct. 7.

Seton Hall never led in game one, falling behind 12-6, early on. The Pirates hung with the Panthers throughout the game, never trailing by more than a margin of six points, but lost, 30-25. In game two, Seton Hall prevented Pittsburgh from going on a big scoring run to start the game, but, with the score tied, 10-10, the Panthers went on an 8-1 scoring run and eventually took the game, 30-25.

Game three was the most competitive, but the final result was the same as the first two, with Pittsburgh winning, 30-27. Although the Pirates never trailed in the game, they kept the score close, failing to allow any large scoring runs. However, towards the end of the game, the Panthers built a 28-22 lead, which proved to be insurmountable, and Pittsburgh took the game by a three-point margin.

Seton Hall returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 30, when it will travel to Morgantown, W. Va., to take on West Virginia at 2:00 p.m., in the WVU Coliseum.
