Volleyball Falls to No. 6 Louisville, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall volleyball team on Friday lost to No. 6 Louisville, 3-0 (30-22, 31-29, 30-21), in Walsh Gym. The Pirates were paced by freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio), who had a team-high 10 kills to go along with seven digs. With the loss, the Pirates fall to 7-10 overall, 1-4 in the BIG EAST, and Louisville remains unbeaten, boasting a 15-0 overall record, 5-0 in the BIG EAST.

The Cardinals were led by senior Lena Ustymenko, who had a match-high 20 kills on .633 hitting, and she was the only Louisville player to reach double-digit kills.

Game two was the closest of the match, and stands as one of the few times the Cardinals have really been tested in conference play. The 29 points the Pirates put up in the frame is the second-highest single-game total against Louisville in the BIG EAST this year.

In that game, Seton Hall never trailed by more than three points, and came back from a late two-point deficit to have a shot at earning the win. Down 28-26, the Pirates rallied to tie the game on a kill from senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.), which was immediately followed by an attacking error on Ustymenko, her only error of the game. Another attack error, this time on the Pirates’ Jessica King (Midland, Ontario), gave Louisville the lead, but senior Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) followed with a kill to tie to the game 29-29 and force extra points. However, the Cardinals pulled out the win on two more kills from Ustymenko, winning 31-29.

Seton Hall had strong performances from several players. Davis finished the match with nine kills and a team-high attacking percentage of .444, and Scholl added nine kills of her own. Freshman setter Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) turned in another solid outing, assisting 42 scores and leading the team with 12 digs.

The Pirates return to action this Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2:00 p.m., when they will host the Cincinnati Bearcats in Walsh Gym.
