Volleyball Falls to Cincinnati, 3-1

Sophomore Jennifer Procuniar had 10 kills and nine digs against Cincinnati.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.Y. – The Seton Hall volleyball team on Sunday lost to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 3-1, in Walsh Gym. The Pirates were led by freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio), who had a match and career-high 18 kills, hitting .519, and tallying seven digs and five blocks. With the loss, Seton Hall falls to 7-11 overall, 1-5 in the BIG EAST, while Cincinnati is now 11-6 overall, 4-1 in the BIG EAST.

The Pirates dropped the competitive first game of the match, 30-26, and had several chances to take game two, but fell short, losing, 36-34. From the point that Seton Hall led, 29-28, the two teams traded nine consecutive points, before Cincinnati finally took command. An attacking error on Seton Hall’s Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) gave the Bearcats a 34-33 lead, but Procuniar rebounded with a kill of her own, to even the score, 34-34. Cincinnati responded, taking the next two points, with an error on Procuniar and a game-winning kill from freshman Jessie Nevitt.

Seton Hall was un-phased by the tough game two loss, storming out of the intermission to win game three, 30-15. The 15-point winning margin was the highest for the Pirates this season. In that third frame, Seton Hall had a .280 attacking percentage, and took advantage of 13 Bearcat attack errors.

Cincinnati went on to take game four, 30-21. It was the team’s best offensive game of the contest, hitting .286 with fifteen kills and only three errors. For the match, both teams struggled offensively; Seton Hall only hitt .122 as a team, and Cincinnati hit .153.

Procuniar was the only Pirate other than Meyers to reach double-digit kills, finishing the match with 10, in addition to tallying nine digs, narrowly missing a double-double. Sophomore Kelly Widders (Dublin, Ohio) had a nine kills, and senior Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had seven kills and seven blocks. Junior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) had a match-high 23 digs, and freshman setter Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had 51 assists and 11 digs.

Seton Hall will begin a four-match non-conference stretch on Tuesday, Oct. 11, when it hosts Siena in Walsh Gym at 7:30 p.m.
