Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown in Season Finale

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall volleyball team ended its season on a high-note, sweeping Georgetown in Walsh Gym on Sunday. The Pirates were once again led by junior Jessica King (Midland, Ontario), who had a match-high 17 kills. With the victory, Seton Hall finishes the season with a 14-16 overall record, 4-10 in the BIG EAST. Georgetown’s season also concluded with Sunday’s match. The Hoyas end the year with a 6-22 overall record, 2-12 in the BIG EAST.

Two other Pirates recorded double-digit kills, freshman Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) tallied 12, and freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) netted 11.

Junior libero Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) finished with a match-high 15 digs. Pompei ends the 2005 season with 413 digs, the new Seton Hall single-season record. Freshman Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had 42 assists in the match, bringing her season total to 1,248, the third best setting season in the Pirates’ history.

For Georgetown, Rachel Nelson led the team with 16 kills. Katie Nulty was the only other Hoya to have double-digit kills, tallying 11. Caitlin Boland had a match-high 46 assists, but Georgetown struggled offensively, hitting only .129 as a team.

Seton Hall trailed much of the first game, but was never down by more than four points. The Pirates tied the score at 25-25 late in the game, and pulled away for the 30-28 win. Game two was not nearly as close, with Seton Hall cruising to a 30-20 victory.

Game three played out similarly to game one, with Georgetown leading for much of the contest and Seton Hall rallying for the win. Down 20-12, Seton Hall rattled off a 10-3 scoring run to tie the game, 23-23. The team’s traded the next six points, but with the score tied 26-26, the Pirates took the next four points, to win, 30-26. For Seton Hall, it was the first win over Georgetown since 1994.

Prior to the match, Seton Hall held a Senior Day ceremony, honoring its two seniors, Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.) and Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.). In the final match of their careers, Scholl compiled five kills, three digs and five blocks, and Davis had three kills and a match-high seven blocks.

Scholl ends her Seton Hall career with 573 kills and 155 total blocks in 266 career games, while Davis finishes with 574 kills and 297 total blocks, playing in 308 career games.
