Volleyball Suffers Tough Loss at Marquette, 3-2

Freshman Tricia Meyers led the Pirates with a career-high 21 kills.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Seton Hall volleyball lost a close match at Marquette, 3-2, in the Al McGuire Center on Friday. The Pirates are now 0-2 this year in five-game matches, losing their only other to Connecticut on Oct. 2. With the loss, Seton Hall now stands at 12-15 overall, 2-9 in the BIG EAST, while Marquette improves to 15-10 overall, 7-5 in the BIG EAST.

The Pirates had three freshman set new career-highs in the match. Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied a team-high 21 kills, passing her old career-high of 18. Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) also set a new career-high in kills, totaling 18, surpassing her previous personal best of 14. Meyers and Leisner both had double-doubles, with 10 digs apiece.

Setter Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was the third first-year player to put up big numbers in the loss, finishing the match with 62 assists. Her previous single-match best was 56, set against Connecticut. Junior Jessica King (Midland, Ontario) stood as the only other Pirate to have double-digit kills, finishing with 13. Senior Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had nine kills and a match-high eight blocks, and junior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) netted a team-high 11 digs, bringing her season total to 374.

Three players recorded double-digit kills for the Golden Eagles, with Kimberly Todd recording a match-high, 35. Also for Marquette, Jamie Mueller and Theresa Coughlin both had double-doubles, with 16 kills and 17 digs for Mueller, and 15 kills and 12 digs for Coughlin. As a team, the Golden Eagles tallied 88 total kills, with an attacking percentage of .297.

The meeting was a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams alternating wins for the first four games. The Pirates took game one, 30-24, but Marquette responded to win game two, 30-25. Seton Hall went on to take game three, 30-24, but the Golden Eagles were able to force a deciding fifth game, by winning game four, 30-26.

In game five, Marquette jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, but Seton Hall came right back to tie the score, 5-5. The game stayed tight for the next several points, but with the score standing at 10-10, Marquette took command behind two kills from Mueller, earning the 15-12 victory.

Seton Hall will return to action this Sunday, Nov. 6, when it will travel to Syracuse for a 2:00 p.m. match.
