Volleyball Sweeps DePaul in BIG EAST Opener

Freshman Tricia Meyers had a double-double, 13 kills and 12 digs, in Seton Hall's victory over DePaul.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Seton Hall volleyball team won its BIG EAST opener on Saturday, sweeping the DePaul Blue Demons, 3-0. With the win, the Pirates improved to 7-6 overall, while DePaul fell to 3-7. Freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Pirates, turning in the first double-double of her career, posting 13 kills and 12 digs in the victory. Meyers hit an astounding .632 in the match, the team's highest individual single-match mark this season.

Senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.) was Seton Hall’s only other player to record double-digit kills, finishing the match with 11. Senior Amber Davis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) blocked 13 Blue Demon attacks, setting a new career high. She narrowly missed achieving a double-double, registering nine kills in the match. Junior libero Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) led the Pirates with 15 digs, and freshman Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tallied a match-high 39 assists.

Seton Hall had a season-high 32 blocks in the victory, and it hit .235 as a team. The team’s front line defense led to DePaul hitting only .067 for the match.

The first two games of the match were hotly contested, with the Pirates prevailing in the final plays. Seton Hall won game one, 30-26, ending the game on a 5-1 scoring run. In the second game, Seton Hall began to pull away midway through, taking a 21-16 lead, but the Blue Demons rallied to pull within one point, 24-23. However, a pair of kills from Scholl in addition to three more from Meyers down the stretch iced the game for the Pirates, who prevailed, 30-27.

In the third game, Seton Hall stormed out of the intermission to take a 12-1 lead, and would eventually prevail 30-21. DePaul only mustered eight kills in the final game, and hit -.158 as a team in the loss.

Seton Hall returns to action tomorrow afternoon, when it travels to Notre Dame, Ind., to take on the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Joyce Center at 1:00 p.m.
