Volleyball Falls At No. 11 Notre Dame, 3-0

Junior Jessica Pompei had a match-high 20 digs against Notre Dame.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Seton Hall volleyball team fell to the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 3-0, at the Joyce Center on Sunday. The loss dropped the Pirates record to 7-7 overall, 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Fighting Irish improved to 8-1 overall, 1-0 in the BIG EAST. Freshman Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the only Seton Hall player to achieve double-digit kills, finishing the match with 10.

Junior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) tallied a team-high 20 digs for Seton Hall, senior Allison Scholl (Cupertino, Calif.) had eight kills, and sophomore Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) compiled eight kills and 12 digs. For the match, Seton Hall hit .124 as a team.

The Pirates were without junior outside hitter Jessica King (Midland, Ontario), who went down with a knee injury in the first game of the team’s win over DePaul on Saturday. Prior to the loss to Notre Dame, King was the Pirates’ leader in kills, with 132, and kills per game, 3.47.

Notre Dame won the first game easily, 30-12, but Seton Hall played the Fighting Irish close in games two and three. In the second game, the Pirates kept the score close until Notre Dame ended the game on a significant scoring run. Seton Hall was trailing only 19-17, but the Fighting Irish ended the game with a 11-6 run to win, 30-23.

The third game was the most competitive, but the Pirates fell, 30-26. Seton Hall never trailed by more than four points, and had the game tied late, 24-24, but Notre Dame was too much down the stretch. In the third game, Seton Hall had its match-high team hitting percentage, .326, compiling 19 kills and only four errors.

Seton Hall returns to action this Friday, Sept. 30, when it will match up with the St. John’s Red Storm. The match is the first of a seven match home stretch for the Pirates, and will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Walsh Gym.
