Track and Field Competes in Akron Invitational

Graduate Student Andrea Austin placed second in the mile run with a time of 5:03.74.

AKRON, Ohio – The Seton Hall men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Akron Invitational at the Akron Athletics Fieldhouse in Akron, Ohio, on Friday. Both teams finished fourth at the event. The men’s team took two individual events in addition to the 4x400-meter relay crown, tallying 78 team points. The women’s team did not have any individual victories, but also won the 4x400, totaling 75 points at the meet.

Top finishers for the women’s team included senior Denise Cruse (Takoma Park, Md.), who placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.62, graduate student Andrea Austin (Hollywood, Fla.), who was the runner-up in the mile run, 5:03.74, junior Crystal Anyanwu (Beltsville, Md.), coming in third in the 800-meter run, 2:15.88, and sophomore Imani Gilliam (Pennsauken, N.J.), taking third in the 60-meter hurdles finishing in 8.84.

The victorious 4x400 team featured junior Shakeema Martin (Lakewood, N.J.), senior Gorgeous Harper (Philadelphia, Pa.), Austin and Cruse, recording a time of 3:51.17.

Junior Bryan Burney (Mebane, N.C.) earned one of the men’s individual titles, edging out freshman Rob Novak (Bordentown, N.J.) in the 800-meter run. Burney won the event with a time of 1:51.74, only 1.16 faster than Novak’s 1:53.90. Freshman Carl Smith (Camden, N.J.) was the other individual winner, coming in first in the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters.

Senior Sir Leslie Ford (Piscataway, N.J.) had a pair of strong performances for the men’s team. Ford was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash, 48.31, and placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.18. Senior Justin Wood (Walton, N.Y.) was solid in the mile run, coming in second, 4:21.94.

The men’s winning 4x400 team included sophomore Sterling Shelton (Houston, Texas), Burney, Ford and Smith, recording a time of 3:16.61.

The track and field teams return to action next Sunday, Jan. 22, when they will travel to Boston, Mass., to compete in the Greater Boston Invitational.
