Kljestan Named BigAppleSoccer.com College Player of the Year

NEW YORK – Seton Hall midfielder Sacha Kljestan (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was named the Men’s College Player of the Year by BigAppleSoccer.com at the website’s second annual awards ceremony on Thursday night at Nathan Hale’s Bar and Grill. Kljestan who was drafted by C.D. Chivas USA in last week’s MLS SuperDraft, collected his second Player of the Year award after helping the Pirates to a 13-4-3 mark and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Second Round as a junior.
Kljestan capped a stellar three-year career at Seton Hall by earning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-America honors following the 2005 season. He led the Pirates with 33 points on a career-high nine goals and a school-record 15 assists. The midfielder was a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy and earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors. In three seasons, he finished his career with 20 goals and 28 assists (fifth all-time at SHU), before foregoing his final year of eligibility to sign with the MLS. Kljestan was taken by C.D. Chivas USA as the fifth overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft.
Among other award winners named by the website were, retiring Hofstra women’s coach JoAnne Russell, who was named BigAppleSoccer.com's Person of the Year and Women’s College Coach of the Year. Hofstra defender Sue Weber was the Women’s College Player of the Year, while Youri Djorkaeff of the MetroStars was named Pro Player of the Year. A total of 11 awards were named, as selected by the editors and staff of BigAppleSoccer.com to men and women who made contributions to the game in the tri-state area on a daily basis.
