Our Role
The Seton Hall University cheerleading and dance team serves an ambassador to the university and the biggest supporter of Seton Hall Athletics. The program is constantly changing, growing, and improving. There are no specific requirements to be a part of the cheer or dance team; however, we are looking for well-rounded individuals to represent the university and its reputation as one of the most storied institutions in the BIG EAST.
The Seton Hall University cheerleading team is part of the excitement found at every athletics event. We place a special emphasis on using new and innovative ways to lead the crowd.
Uniforms
Cheerleaders are required to purchase their uniforms, warm-ups, bags, and shoes. This is so they can keep them and reuse them for the next year. Poms and practice clothes will be paid for. (Subject to change.)
Cheer Camps
SHU has previously attended the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp at the University of Scranton in early August. The team has also had a UCA private camp in late September. Attending camp will depend on when tryouts are held as well as the turnout at the tryouts.
Practice
Practices are held 2-3 times per week for about two hours. Once games start, game practices become once a week and additional practices are held for those who make the competition team.
Contests & Events
The team is required to attend every home contest for volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball as well as a number of appearances and other events throughout the year.
Being that we have a large team, we are able to create a rotation so not everyone is doing every game. This leaves extra time for school work. It is also expected that the team will participate in different charity events during the season.
At the end of the year, 12 cheerleaders are chosen to travel with the men’s and women’s basketball teams and cheer at the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournaments.
Competition
The squad’s number one priority in cheering for the university is to support the school and its athletics programs. In addition to this, Seton Hall competes at UCA Nationals in Orlando, Fla. in mid-January in Small Co-ed Division I.
SHU began competing in 2011 and has been improving each year.
To be considered for the nationals’ team, you must demonstrate elite stunting skills.
This is most important as it weighs the most on a score sheet. As far as tumbling, a standing tuck is preferred as well as a round off back-handspring tuck. If you do not have the tumbling skills but you possess elite stunting skills, please do not let this turn you away from trying out.
All competition cheerleaders are required to cheer games. Those who have made the competition team are required to stay in their dorms over break for practices up until competition dates.
The program’s budget does not cover the full cost of nationals so cheerleaders will be required to fundraise or pay the remaining balance.
Tryout & Contact Info
It is undecided if there will be a tryout in the spring. Tryouts are usually held during the first week of September for three days. Please check for further information.
