A Day in the Life Program
The Day in the Life Program has two components. In the mentoring component, Seton Hall students (education majors or DOVE volunteers) are paired with East Orange youth for the day. The students get to experience the diversity and globalism of a university in their own backyard. Youth would also experience a day in the life of an undergraduate as their mentors (SHU students) provide campus tours of the University, attend academic, cultural, social and athletic events on campus.
In the program's second component sports and recreation, the Department of Athletics utilizes athletic events to keep young people engaged in the University setting. For instance, after the students have had a tour of campus and spent some time listening to professors and students, we reward them with an athletic event. Better yetwe look to recruit student-athletes to speak to the group of youngsters to challenge them to stay in school and to support higher education. When the youth meet these “Student-Athletes”, their eyes seem to light up.
By establishing close relationships with youth against the backdrop of Seton Hall and our varied resources, we as an academic community are assisting these young people to set goals, increase self-esteem and build confidence in their ability to pursue higher education. I personally believe an individual’s success can hinge on their environment and the scope of their exposure.
There are several units that Athletics would seek to collaborate with to ensure the program is a success, including:
East Orange YMCA
SHU Admissions
Athletics/Student Athlete Advisory Committee
College of Arts and Sciences (Chemistry Show aka “Magic Show”)
College of Education and Human Services
Division of Volunteer Efforts
Food sponsor (TBD)
