SOUTH ORANGE, N.J The Seton Hall volleyball team fell to Marquette, 3-0 (30-28, 32-30, 30-26) on Friday night. The Pirates (15-14, 4-9 BE) led in all three games, but was never able to extend their advantage to hold off the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Pirates with 14 kills and a .417 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs for the match. Freshman Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y) had 10 kills along with nine digs, and senior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) registered 16 digs.
The Pirates led game one, 16-12, then Marquette closed the gap to 17-16. Seton Hall held on to get its lead back to four, at 21-17, but the Golden Eagles took their first lead at 26-25. The Pirates hung around, but it was enough as Marquette won game one, 30-28.
In game two, Seton Hall took the lead at 5-4, but the Golden Eagles went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-7 lead. Marquette ballooned its lead to five three times, including when they made it 29-24. With their backs against the wall, the Pirates rallied and scored six unanswered points to put themselves in position to win the game at 30-29. After a Golden Eagle timeout, Marquette capitalized on two Seton Hall errors, and finished the game with a kill.
The Pirates again had an early advantage in the third game at 11-9, but the Golden Eagles would not go away as they took a 15-14 lead. Seton Hall grabbed the lead back at 17-16, then Marquette regrouped to take a 23-21 lead. The Pirates tied the game at 23-23, but it was not enough as the Golden Eagles went on for the sweep.
The Pirates have their season finale on Sunday, Nov. 12, against Syracuse at 2:00 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium.
