Volleyball Drops Match Against Villanova

Villanova, Pa. The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped its BIG EAST match to Villanova on Friday evening in three games (34-32, 30-16, 31-29).  The Pirates were looking to make up a game against the Wildcats (16-13, 7-5 BE), who hold the eighth and final qualifying spot for the BIG EAST tournament.  Seton Hall pushed the first and third games to extra points but it was not enough, as Villanova went on to the victory.  The Pirates fall to 14-13 overall, and 3-8 in the conference.

Freshman Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) improved her streak of double-doubles to five.  Matters ended up with 16 kills and 19 digs.  Freshman Stacey Craighead (Roanoke, Va.) posted 10 kills, and senior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) had 10 digs.

Seton Hall fell behind 13-6 to begin game one, but the Pirates went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead at 18-16.  The Pirates and Wildcats traded points at the most part with Seton Hall holding the lead.  Seton Hall served for the match twice, at 29-28 and 31-30.  Villanova tied the score at 32-32 and won the game, 34-32 on a kill and a Pirate attack error.

After dropping the second game, 30-16, the Pirates took an early lead only for the Wildcats come back to take an 11-10 lead.  Villanova extended the lead to 18-14, but Seton Hall stayed close and regained the lead 22-20.  The Wildcats came right back to tie the game at 22-22 and took a 25-23 advantage.  The Pirates rallied with a 7-2 run and were serving for the match at 29-27, but Villanova answered by scoring the next four points to finish of Seton Hall.

The Pirates return to action at 2:00 p.m. against Rutgers on Sunday, Nov. 5, in Piscataway, N.J.
