Men's Golf To Compete in BIG EAST Championship

DADE CITY, Fla. – The Seton Hall men’s golf team will begin competition in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club on Monday. For the Pirates, it is the first time they will compete in the conference championships since 2003, when they finished in fifth place.

A change in the BIG EAST Championship format now allows all 12 men’s golf teams to play in the championship. This year’s event will span two days and 54 holes, with 36 holes being played on the first day and 18 on the second.

Sophomore Kyle Morris (Powell, Ohio) is primed to be Seton Hall’s top finisher in the tournament. Morris has been the Pirates’ most consistent performer this season. Morris won a tournament this spring, finishing first at the George Washington Invitational with a two-round score of four-under par. He is currently ranked 11th in the BIG EAST with a 73.6 scoring average.

Also competing in the tournament for Seton Hall will be seniors Michael Byland (Kelowna, British Columbia) and Dean Gultula (Haskell, N.J.), sophomore Rich Brazeau (Portsmouth, N.H.), and freshman John Zur (Glenview, Ill.).

Seton Hall has twice won the BIG EAST Championship, doing so in 1992 and most recently in 2000. Jim Engler paced the Pirates in 1992, finishing in sixth place with a two-round score of 152 (77-75). In 2000, Eugene Smith won the tournament shooting a 141 (69-72). Smith and teammate Brian McGowan, who placed in a tie for third, were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team in 2000.
