Hennessee, Pirates Place Second at Storm-Shortened Macdonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Junior Will Hennessee (Tulsa, Okla.) shot an even-par, 70, to tie for second place and lift the Seton Hall men's golf team to a second-place finish at the storm-shortened Macdonald Cup on Friday.

Due to a ferocious nor'easter blanketing the East Coast, the Macdonald Cup, originally scheduled for three rounds, was forced to shorten to just 18 holes. Tournament officials were hoping to get at least a second round in on Saturday, but the declining weather forced their hand to end the event.

Hennessee had two birdies and 14 pars in route to his even-par, 70. He finished tied for second among 68 individual golfers, two strokes behind the individual champion, Harvard's Alex Zhang. It's Hennessee's third-consecutive top-10 finish to start the 2026-27 year and the sixth of his career.

As a team, The Hall placed second with a 15-over-par, 295, yesterday, despite battling wind gusts as high as 35-miles per hour. Harvard won the team title at 9-over-par. The Pirates have now placed in the top-3 in all three of their tournaments this fall. The Hall is now averaging just 284.86 strokes per round.

Freshman Dylan Holmes (Wicklow, Ireland) had four birdies on Friday to power a 2-over-par, 72. He tied for sixth place, collecting his second top-10 finish in only three collegiate tournaments.

Sophomore Blake Goodnight (Dallas, Texas) had two birdies to fuel a 4-over-par, 74. He tied for 12th place.

Rounding out Seton Hall's lineup, both Jacob De Jesus (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Isaiah Williams (Flemington, N.J.) shot a 9-over-par, 79.

THE COURSE:
In 1923, a 700-acre tract of swamp and woodland was given to Yale by Mrs. Ray Tompkins in memory of her husband. Under the supervision of Charles Blair Macdonald, the renowned golf course architect, champion golfer, and co-founder of the USGA, plans were made for an 18-hole golf course. With a budget of $400,000, Macdonald, in collaboration with Seth Raynor, designed a masterpiece which opened for play in 1926.

Today, the Yale Golf Course is recognized as one of the finest examples from the Macdonald & Raynor portfolios. Large greens with deep bunkers and wide, rolling fairways are the core of Yale's strategic and penal character. The Yale Golf Course is consistently recognized as the finest collegiate course in the nation. The course has been the site of every significant state championship, two USGA Junior National events, and NCAA Regionals in 1991, 1995, 2004, 2010, 2015 and again in 2022. The course has also been the home of the Nike Connecticut Open.

The 6,766-yard, par-70 course features large and deeply bunkered greens and narrow fairways that challenge golfers at all levels of play. Two of the holes—the 432-yard par-4 fourth and the 238-yard par 3 ninth—have been ranked among the world's 100 most difficult holes.Â
