Volleyball Drops Season Opener to UT-Arlington 3-0

NEWARK, DEL. The Seton Hall volleyball team lost its season opener to UT-Arlington on Friday at the first match of the Delaware Invitational by a score of 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 31-29).  The Pirates, who fall to 0-1 on the young season, kept things close despite losing three games in a row to the Mavericks.

Leading the way for the Pirates was by sophomore Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who ended the match with 44 assists.  Senior Jessica King (Midland, Ontario) recorded 16 kills and junior Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) added 20 digs.  Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) also chipped in 15 digs. 

Game one was mostly controlled by UT-Arlington, but the Pirates never seemed to go away.  After the Mavericks tried to pull away, going ahead 14-8, Seton Hall came back to within three points making the game 20-17.  However, that was as close as SHU got in the opening game.

In the second game, the Pirates stayed close with UT-Arlington until the Mavericks jumped to an 18-11 lead.  Seton Hall tried to put together a run but they never could catch UT-Arlington, falling by a score of 30-22.

It looked like the Pirates had turned things around at the beginning of game three.  Seton Hall led most of the way until the Mavericks found a way to take a 21-20 lead and began to pull away.   However, the Pirates tied the score at 27 and then again at 29, but it was not enough as UT-Arlington took the third game 31-29.

The Pirates are back in action twice on Saturday, August 26, at the Delaware Invitational, when they face the host Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens at 1:00 p.m. and the Marist Red Foxes at 5:00 p.m.
