NEWARK, DEL. After the volleyball team lost their first match this afternoon at the Delaware Invitational to host Delaware in four games (30-25, 23-30, 30-28, 32-30), the Pirates defeated Marist (30-15, 28-30, 30-15, 30-18) in four games to notch their first win of the season.
Leading the way for the Pirates in the first match was sophomore Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who had 45 assists in addition to her 44 from yesterday’s match against UT-Arlington. Sophomore Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill) and junior Jennifer Procuniar (Grapevine, Texas) each had 13 kills and 14 digs for Seton Hall. The 13 kills ties Procuniar’s career high. Senior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) added 29 digs, bringing her only 112 away from the Pirates career record. Delaware’s Megan Welch had 59 of her team’s 61 assists in the match.
Game four was the most competitive game of the match. Delaware jumped out to an early lead but Seton Hall rallied and tied game four at 14. The two teams traded points and then the Fightin Blue Hens and took their largest lead of the game at 24-18. The Pirates bounced back and went on a 10-2 run to take a 28-26 lead. Delaware then went on to take the next four points to set up match point, but a service error tied the game at 29. With the score tied at 30, a block and a kill won the game and the match for the Fightin Blue Hens.
In the second match for the Pirates, sophomore Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a team high 13 kills. Procuniar added 11 kills, and Rahrer wrapped up her weekend with a 24 assist effort against the Red Foxes. Freshman libero Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y ) also played a key role for Seton Hall with four service aces and 11 digs.
After Seton Hall dropped the second game, 30-28, the Pirates responded by winning game three. The deciding game four of the match started with a 9-3 run for Seton Hall and the closest Marist could cut the deficit was 3, at 14-11 as the Pirates went on to win game the 30-18.
The Pirates return to action on Friday, September 1, against Hofstra at 7:00 p.m. at the Hofstra-Asics Invitational Tournament.
