Volleyball Wins Home Opener

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.-The Seton Hall volleyball team won their first home match of the 2006 season on Wednesday evening, defeating Iona 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-15).  The Pirates improve their record to 3-4, while the Gaels fall to 2-4 on the year.

Seton Hall was led by sophomore Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) who had 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .455 for the match.  Senior Jessica Pompei (Fairview Park, Ohio) added 21 digs and is now only four behind Laura Romeika for the Pirate career record.

After the Pirates took game one, 30-20, the Gaels kept up with Seton Hall in game two.  With the score tied, 9-9, the Pirates went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-9 lead.  As Seton Hall was serving for the game, Iona tried to spark a late rally, going on a 6-0 run to come within six of the Pirates. Iona then committed a service error to seal the win for Seton Hall in game two.  The Pirates went on to win game three, 30-15, to earn the match victory.

The Pirates host the Seton Hall Invitational on Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9.  Seton Hall’s first match of the invitational is Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Fordham.
