AKRON, Ohio - The Seton Hall track and field team resumed competition at the University of Akron Invitational on Friday.The women’s team continued to rack up postseason spots in the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships, while five individuals on the men’s team qualified for the indoor postseason.
Senior Shakeema Martin (Lakewood, N.J.) won the 400-meter, securing her place in the BIG EAST and ECAC’s. Freshman Shamika Kentish (Virginia Beach, Va.) took third place in the 60-meter dash and earned a spot in both postseason competitions as well.
Sophomore Adama Pitts (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.) qualified for their second events at the BIG EAST Championships. Pitts ran a 25.53 in the 200 meter, and Friday was the runner-up to Martin in the 400-meter, finishing the race in 57.55.
Junior Janielle Brothwaite (Christ Church, Barbados) will be joining her fellow Pirates after placing second in the 60-meter hurdles, with a finishing time of 8.93.
For the men, junior Greg Gomes (Somerset, N.J.) qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships in the 800-meter, winning the event in 1:54.36.
In the one-mile, sophomore Rob Novak (Bordentown, N.J.) and Desmond Perkins (Chesapeake, Va.) both clinched their spots in the conference championships, finishing first and second respectively. Novak clocked in at 4:14.92 and Perkins at 4:16.19.
Two Pirates from the Bronx qualified for postseason in the 400-meter event. Sophomore Jamel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) was the runner-up (48.98) and qualified for the event at the BIG EAST and ECAC’s. His teammate, junior Dwight Crooks (Bronx, N.Y.) took sixth place and clocked in at 49.61, good enough to secure a spot in the BIG EAST Championships.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Greater Boston Invitational.
