SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team had to hang on to defeat Cincinnati, 3-2 (30-28, 30-28, 21-30, 16-30, 15-11) to pick up their first BIG EAST home win of the season. The Pirates (11-10; 2-6 BE) were led by great outings by freshman Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.), junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.).
Osmun had another monster performance, with 25 kills and 13 digs. Seton Hall is now 8-3 when Osmun posts a double-double. Matters had 21 kills on a .340 attack percentage, and also registered 13 digs. Rahrer did what she does best; serving up 65 assists and added 10 digs.
The Pirates led by as many as five points in game one, but could not put the Bearcats (14-7; 5-3 BE) away. Cincinnati fought back to tie the game at 27-27, but Osmun served an ace to preserve the win.
Game two was played very similarly to the first set with Seton Hall holding a small advantage most of the way. The Bearcats once again tied the game at 27-27, but junior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) put Cincinnati away with one of her 18 kills.
The Bearcats came out of the intermission clicking on all cylinders and cruised to victories in games three and four.
Cincinnati got off to another solid start in the fifth game, taking an early 5-3 lead. The Pirates used a small 5-2 run to take the lead for good, and Matters finished the win with one of her three aces on the match.
Seton Hall returns to the road to take on Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2:00 p.m. in Villanova, Pa.
