RICHMOND, Va. - The Seton Hall men's and women's track and field teams resumed outdoor competition over the weekend at the Richmond Invitational. Senior Joanna Borawski (Bayonne, N.J.) broke her own school record in the javelin throw which she set at the Coastal Carolina Invitational earlier this month. The Pirates added 12 individuals and three relay teams who will compete at the BIG EAST and IC4A/ECAC Outdoor Championships.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team earned a victory, earning a bid to the ECAC's after clocking in at 3:42.55. The squad of Alexandra McCoy (Goldsboro, N.C.), Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.), Jernail Hayes (Newark, Del.), and Shakeema Martin (Lakewood, N.J.) also set a facility record with their mark.
Hayes and McCoy were 2-of-6 runners that broke the facility record in the 400-meter hurdles as well. Hayes had a time of 1:02.49, and McCoy in 1:02.85, and both qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. Friday earned an individual spot in both postseason meets by finishing in second place in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 56.25.
Sophomore Adama Pitts (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Shamika Kentish (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished third and fourth in the 100-meter dash, respectively, and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. Pitts ran the event in 12.21, and Kentish in 12.24.
In the women's 100-meter hurdles, three Pirates clinched births in the conference postseason. Junior Janielle Braithwaite (Christ Church, Barbados) won the event in 14.62, senior Dominique Washington (Baltimore, Md.) was the runner-up (14.69), and junior Imani Gilliam (Pennsauken, N.J) finished fifth (14.82).
Washington also qualified for the BIG EAST's in the long jump (5.61 meters).
Sophomore James Gurr (Sydney, Australia) already qualified for the both postseason competitions in the 400-meter dash earlier this month, and will add the 800-meter run to that list. Gurr was victorious in the 800-meter, clocking in at 1:51.76.
Like the women, the men's relay teams also had a successful day. The 4x100 squad of Sean Morris (Burlington, N.J.), Jemel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.), Carl Smith (Camden, N.J.), and Gurr took second place with a time of 42.28 to qualify for the IC4A's. Williams went on to win the 400-meter dash in 48.20 to qualify for the IC4A and BIG EAST Championships.
The 4x800-meter team of Desmond Perkins (Chesapeake, Va.), Justin McKenzie (Marlboro, Md.), Gurr, and Rob Novak (Bordentown, N.J.) coasted to victory and an IC4A birth. The Pirates time of 7:39.43 was 14.73 seconds faster than the second place time. Novak will also compete at the BIG EAST Championships in the 1,500-meter after finishing the race in 3:53.77 this weekend.
The Pirates resume competition on Fri. Apr. 6 at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.
