BRONX, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team improved to 7-4 after defeating Fordham 3-1 (25-30, 37-35, 30-25, 30-24) at the Rose Hill Invitational. Junior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered 19 kills to lead the Pirates, who had three players with double-digit kills.
Meyers scored the Pirates' first four points of the match, but the Rams (6-8) were the team ahead early on in game one. Trailing 17-11, Seton Hall took advantage on miscues by the Rams to remain close, but the Pirates could not overcome the early deficit and dropped the game.
Seton Hall held the lead for the majority of game two and were on the verge of tying the match with a 28-22 lead. Fordham responded out of a timeout by going on an 8-1 run to take over the lead at 30-29. The Pirates came back to tie the game six times to stay in the frame, and once again capitalized on Ram errors to win the marathon game, 37-35.
Fordham jumped out to a 10-4 lead to start the third game, but Seton Hall methodically came back and took an 18-17 advantage. Despite tying the game twice, the Rams did not regain the lead and the Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Pirates were the team with the hot start in game four, taking a 15-8 lead. A 6-1 run by Fordham cut the Seton Hall lead to two, but a 7-3 run by the Pirates helped to seal the victory.
Sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) posted 16 kills and 14 digs for a double-double. Freshman Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 13 kills and 14 digs. Junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) handed out 52 assists and added 13 digs. Senior Kelly Widders (Dublin, Ohio) came off the bench for seven kills.
