SOUTH ORANGE Seton Hall University honored Ed Lucas, baseball reporter, Seton Hall alumnus and friend to Phil Rizzuto, on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Lucas shared his tales of the game, answered questions about the players, and gave stories about his life at Seton Hall and beyond.
On October 3, 1951, the day that the New York Giants defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers to win the National League Pennant, Ed Lucas a young Giants fan lost his sight, but this unfortunate event did not deter him from making a living as baseball reporter who has achieved fame through his reports and extraordinary life on the whole. In honor of his many accomplishments and ties to Seton Hall University (Class of 1962), the Msgr. William No Field Archives & Special Collections Center is sponsoring a window exhibit in conjunction with the Walsh Library Gallery to run from August-November 2007. The display can be viewed by walking along the left side of the Walsh Library Arcade facing the Richie Regan Recreation Center.
Displayed are several autographed items from Ed’s personal collection including an Alex Rodriguez jersey, Derek Jeter bat and items from Seton Hall’s own Craig Biggio who recently reached 3,000 career hits. Special sections on photographs taken with Ed’s famous friends from Bill Clinton to Bob Hope and tributes to the famed “Shot Heard Round The World” Giants-Dodgers Playoff game of October 3, 1951, the day Ed lost his sight and Phil Rizzuto, who was a lifelong friend who passed away recently, compliment a biographical retrospective on his life as a reporter, baseball fan and Setonian alike.
