SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team suffered its second consecutive sweep after falling to Connecticut (30-27, 30-17, 30-28) on Sunday. Freshman Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the Pirates (9-6; 0-2 BE) with 14 kills and nine digs.
Seton Hall fell behind 16-11 to open the match, but slowly started to close the gap. After an Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) kill tied the game, 20-20, the Huskies regained the lead and pushed it to 25-21. The Pirates tried to make one more come back after block assists by Matters, sophomore Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas), and senior Kelly Widders (Dublin, Ohio) made it 27-25, but the teams traded the next five points and UConn went on for the game one win.
The Pirates looked to bounce back from a 30-17 loss in game two by taking a 15-10 lead in the third frame. Seton Hall held onto the lead until a 5-0 run by the Huskies tied the game at 19-19. After the score tied for the eighth time in the game, Connecticut took the lead for good to finish the sweep.
Matters finished with a team-high 11 digs and junior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) dished out 39 assists.
The Pirates will travel to South Bend, Ind. to face Notre Dame on Sept. 29.
