CHICAGO, Ill. - The Seton Hall volleyball team snapped a three match losing streak by defeating DePaul, 3-0 (30-27, 31-29, 30-24). The Pirates, who had three players in double-figure kills, picked up their first BIG EAST win of the season to improve to 1-3 in the conference and 10-7 overall.
Sophomore Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) and freshman Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each posted double-doubles. Matters finished with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Osmun tallied 15 kills to go with 15 digs. Juniors Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) also had strong performances. Meyers had 12 kills, and Rahrer dished out 52 assists.
Seton Hall jumped ahead 4-1 to start game one, but the Blue Demons (4-13; 0-4 BE) went on a quick 5-0 run to take over the lead. With the score tied at eight, the Pirates used an 8-2 run of their own to regain the lead at 16-10. An attack error on DePaul pushed the Seton Hall advantage to 19-11, forcing a Blue Demon timeout. DePaul responded by taking the next seven points, but that was as close as they came as the Pirates won the game on a service ace by freshman Megan Murison (Woodridge, Ill.), 30-27.
In game two, Seton Hall had a 15-10 advantage, but the Blue Demons mounted another run of 6-0 to jump in front. DePaul held a small lead for the next portion of the game, and looked to pull away after extending the score to 26-23. The Pirates went on to score six of the next eight points to knot the game a 28-28, and two Matters kills gave Seton Hall the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Pirates controlled game three, holding the lead the entire frame to finish the sweep.
Seton Hall returns to action on Oct. 6 when they will face Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa. at 2:00 p.m.
