
Men's Relay Teams Dominate at Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Seton Hall track and field men's relay teams had a dominant day at the Yale Intercollegiate Track Classic on Saturday. The 4x400 and 4x800-meter squads shattered IC4A Indoor Championship qualifying times, while adding three individuals to the postseason roster. The women's team also had a successful day after four athletes and a relay team qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.
The men's top relay squads in the 4x400 and 4x800 shattered IC4A qualifying times. The 4x400 "A" team finished up in 3:15.66, over four seconds faster than the standard time. The Pirates' "B" squad also qualified, running the race in 3:19.79. In the 4x800, the "A" team ran a time of 7:42.36, just over 10-seconds faster than the qualifying mark.
In the men's 400-meter dash, junior James Gurr (Sydney, Australia) clocked in at 48.92 to qualify for the IC4A's. Junior Jemel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) earned a spot in the same event at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a time of 49.56.
Sophomore Anthony Rowley (Fort Drum, N.Y.) reached 1.94 meters in the high jump to make it to the BIG EAST Championships.
The women had a strong showing in jumping events. Freshman Shakia Forbes (Rocky Mount, N.C.) hit an ECAC mark of 5.86 meters as she took first place in the long jump. In the same event, senior Dionne Griffiths (Bronx, N.Y.) clinched a berth at the BIG EAST's with a jump of 5.54 meters.
Freshman Donna Joy Alexander (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) finished second in the triple jump, and just missed the BIG EAST mark by .03 meters after an attempt of 11.25.
Sophomore Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.) had already qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in the 400-meter dash, but improved her season-best time to 56.69 on Saturday to earn a spot in the ECAC's.
Also in the 400-meter dash, senior Shameeka Speed (Millville, N.J.) squeaked by a BIG EAST standard time by .01 seconds (58.23). Ironically, she also qualified for the BIG EAST's in the long jump by .01 meters earlier this season.
The women's 4x400-meter relay "A" team also qualified for the ECAC's with a time of 3:55.15.
Seton Hall returns to action on Saturday, January 19, at the Penn State Open at University Park, Pa.
