
Track and Field Competes at Penn State Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Seton Hall track and field team continued to add to its postseason roster after running at the Penn State Open on Saturday. The Pirates had five men and six women clinch a spot in either the BIG EAST or IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships.
Senior Dwayne Joseph (Willingboro, N.J.) improved on his conference qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles to 8.17 in the preliminary heat, earning a place in the IC4A's. Joseph cut his mark down to 8.03 in the final running to pick up a win the event. In addition, he will also run in the 200-meter dash at the BIG EAST's after clocking in at 22.36.
Juniors Jemel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.), Rob Novak (Bordentown, N.J.), and freshman Nick Frimpong (East Hartford, Conn.) were the other male IC4A qualifiers at the meet. Williams ran the 500-meter dash in 1:03.63, Novak hit 1:53.40 in the 800-meter run, and Frimpong had a 15.11 meter attempt in the triple jump.
Senior Greg Gomes (Somerset, N.J.) was victorious in the 600-meter run (1:18.78), as was the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Williams, Carl Smith (Camden, N.J.), Gomes, and Brian Burney (Mebane, N.C.) (3:13.03).
Freshman Matt Rendina (Boothwyn, Pa.) will race in his first BIG EAST Champiosnhip event after running to a 22.52 finish in the 200-meter dash.
Junior Adama Pitts (Jacksonville, Fla.) also had a successful day, qualifying for the BIG EAST's in two events. Pitts ran a 7.83 in the preliminary heat of the 60-meter dash, then hit 25.44 in the 200-meter dash.
Also in the women's 200-meter dash, freshman Shakia Forbes (Rocky Mount, N.C.) hit a BIG EAST standard time (25.37).
Senior Janeille Brathwaite (Christ Church, Barbados), freshman KeAira Dickerson (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.) each qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 400 and 500-meter dashes, respectively. Brathwaite ran a personal-best time of 55.78 in her event, while Dickerson ran a 1:15.12, and Friday was just behind her with a 1:15.45.
Junior Chavanne Hubbard (Somerset, N.J.) added to her list of postseason events after running a time of 2:15.89 in the 800-meter run. Hubbard previously qualified for the ECAC's in the 500-meter run at the SHU New Year's Classic.
Seton Hall will return to action at the Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass. The competition will run from January 25-26.
