BOSTON, Mass. - The Seton Hall track and field team had another strong competition, seeing 20 individuals clinch spots in postseason events at the Terrier Classic last weekend. The men's team was very strong in middle-distance events, while the women had four top finishers in the 200-meter dash.
In men's the 400, junior Jemel Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) ran a 49.08 to hit an IC4A qualifying standard, while seniors Sterling Shelton (Houston, Texas) (49.55), Dwayne Joseph (Willingboro, N.J.) (49.70), and Dwight Crooks (Bronx, N.Y.) (49.78) ran BIG EAST qualifying marks, respectively.
In the 500-meter dash, senior Greg Gomes (Somerset, N.J.) clocked in at 1:02.80 to qualify for the IC4A's, and the right to defend his back-to-back BIG EAST titles.
Three other males will join Gomes in the event at the IC4A's after senior Bryan Burney (Mebane, N.C.) ran a 1:03.37, junior Carl Smith (Camden, N.J.) hit 1:03.56, and freshman Marvin Carter (Bordentown, N.J.) finished in 1:04.80.
Junior James Gurr (Sydney, Australia) just missed an NCAA provisional time in the 800-meter, but did qualify for the IC4A's after running a 1:50.87. Senior Justin McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md.) also hit the standard time, finishing in 1:54.37.
Junior Rob Novak (Bordentown, N.J.) will also look to retain his BIG EAST crown after hitting conference and IC4A standards in the 1,000-meter run. Novak won the race in 2:25.37.
In addition, Smith ran a time of 22.31 in the 200-meter dash for a spot in the conference championships.
For the women in the 200, junior Adama Pitts (Jacksonville, Fla.), sophomore Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.), and senior Shameeka Speed (Millville, N.J.) each qualified for the ECAC's, while freshman Donna Joy Alexander (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) ran her way to the BIG EAST's.
Pitts also won the 400-meter dash to clinch a place in the BIG EAST Championships.
Senior Janeille Brathwaite (Christ Church, Barbados) continued her dominance winning the 55-meter hurdles in 8.17 and qualifying for the ECAC Championships.
Junior Alexandra McCoy (Goldsboro, N.C.) picked up a victory in the 500-meter dash, winning the race in 1:12.86 to qualify for the ECAC Indoor Championships.
Freshman KeAira Dickerson (Wilmington, Del.) hit a time of 2:14.05 to join her teammates at ECAC's in the 800-meter run.
Both men's and women's 4x400-meter relay squads were victorious on the day as well. The men ran a time of 3:13.37, and the women clocked in at 3:43.53.
The Pirates return to action at the Metropolitan Championships on January 31. In addition, several relay teams and individuals will compete at the prestigious Millrose Games on February 1, at Madison Square Garden.
