Volleyball Powers Past Fordham, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. A 16-0 run in the first set highlighted the Seton Hall volleyball team’s 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-21) win over Fordham. Junior libero Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) had an outstanding individual performance with 21 digs.

Freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) anchored the Pirate (8-8) attack with a match-high 12 kills. Senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) recorded 24 assists.

Trailing 9-6 in the early stages of the match, SHU turned it on after a kill by junior Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas). Rahrer then served for the next 15 points, while Thornquist and senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted three kills apiece during the huge rally for the Pirates, who breezed to a 25-12 win in the frame.

Set two was played much closer, but the Hall held a slim margin throughout. The Pirates began to pull away after one of sophomore Sarah Osmun’s (Crystal Lake, Ill.) six kills made it 15-11. However, a 5-1 spurt by the Rams (10-8) tied the score, 16-16.

After a kill from freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) put Seton Hall back on top by three points, Fordham came back once again to pull within, 23-22. On the next point, Osmun answered with a kill, and then served up an ace to stave off the Rams in the set.

The Pirates continued to control the tempo in the third set, going up by as many six points. The Rams tried to mount another comeback, cutting the SHU lead to 23-20, but the rally was too late as the Pirates went on for the sweep.

Seton Hall returns to BIG EAST action on Saturday, October 4, when they take on Rutgers at Walsh Gym. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
