CINCINNATI, Ohio The Seton Hall volleyball team gave Cincinnati a run for its money, but ultimately fell to the Bearcats, 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21) on Friday evening. The Pirates fall to 10-9 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST on the season.
Freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each tallied 14 kills to lead the attack. Cincinnati native Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted 10 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) anchored the defense with 21 digs.
Seton Hall held a slim lead in the first set, but was only able to push the advantage to three after a Thornquist kill made it, 16-13. The Pirates were on the brink of taking the frame up 23-21, but Cincinnati (14-5; 3-2) came up with a clutch 4-0 run to go ahead in the contest.
With the score 14-11 in favor of the Bearcats, SHU rattled off six straight points to take a two-point lead. It looked like the Pirates were going to let another opportunity to win a set slip away after a Bearcat block and an Osmun attack error tied the score, 24-24. This time the Hall regrouped, and took the next two points to tie the match.
Cincinnati took its largest lead of the match after starting the third set up, 10-5. SHU stayed close for much of the game, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome as they fell, 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Bearcats jumped out to an 11-7 lead and looked to put the Pirates away. Back-to-back kills from freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) cut the deficit to 16-14 to keep the Hall in the match. Another Thornquist kill tied the score, 20-20, but Cincinnati finished the match on a 5-1 run to complete the win.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, October 12, when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Cardinals. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
