Volleyball Squeezes Orange, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. A strong defensive effort that saw four Seton Hall volleyball players record double-digit digs guided the Pirates to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) triumph over Syracuse. The win keeps SHU’s chances to make the postseason strong as they even its record at 13-13 overall and 5-6 in the BIG EAST.

 

Sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) notched nine first set digs, and finished with a match-high 23. Senior Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Megan Murison (Woodridge, Ill.) notched 16 and 11 digs, respectively.

 

In the first set, everything was clicking for the Pirates as they went ahead 12-6 after a kill by freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.). Three straight kills from Osmun gave SHU its largest lead, 21-11, and took the set, 25-18.

 

The Orange (15-13; 6-5 BE) opened the second with four consecutive points, but Seton Hall ripped off an 11-3 run to take go ahead, 11-7. Later, Osmun extended the advantage to 18-13 with a kill, but Syracuse rallied late to make it 24-21. On the next point, a sneak attack kill from senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished the set and gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the contest.

 

Set three began much like the first with the Orange ahead, 6-3. SHU put together a 7-2 spurt to take a 10-8 edge. Syracuse was able to regain the lead on two occasions, but an attack error gave the Pirates the lead back for good. Seton Hall outscored the Orange 10-4 to finish the sweep.

 

The Pirates return to action on Sunday, November 9 against Marquette for Senior Day. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
