WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Senior Janeille Brathwaite (Christ Church, Barbados) and sophomore Jernail Hayes (Newark, Del.) punched two more tickets to the NCAA Regionals for the Pirates in the 400-meter hurdles. After one day of competition at the Colonial Relays, the women’s squad is in second place, while the men sit sixth.
Hayes won the event in 58.75, beating the standard time by almost two seconds. Brathwaite was the runner-up, clocking in at 1:00.77, respectively. Junior Alexandra McCoy (Goldsboro, N.C.) was the third place finisher in that event, finishing in 1:01.38.
In the women’s long jump, freshman Shakia Forbes (Rocky Mount, N.C.) improved her ECAC qualifying jump to 5.95 meters to win the event. Senior Dionne Griffiths (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a BIG EAST standard mark of 5.63 meters en route to a fifth place finish.
The women’s squad also had strong preliminary heats in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday. Braithwaite had the second fastest qualifying time (14.37) and was able to clinch a spot in the ECAC’s. Senior Imani Gilliam (Pennsauken, N.J.) had already qualified for the conference championships, but earned a spot in the ECAC’s as well after a time of 14.36, the third fastest time in the preliminaries. Senior Dominique Washington (Baltimore, Md.) crossed the finish line in 14.74 to earn a spot in the BIG EAST’s and the finals of the event.
Sophomore Toneisha Friday (Somerset, N.J.) added the 400-meter dash to her list of postseason events. She ran her race in 55.99 to finish in second place to clinch a berth at the ECAC Championships.
In the women’s 100-meter dash, junior Adama Pitts (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore Shamika Kentish (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit BIG EAST qualifying marks. Pitts ran the third fastest time of the preliminaries (12.14), while Kentish was sixth (12.18) to earn the right to compete in the finals later this weekend.
Pitts also ran a conference standard in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 25.00.
Freshman KeAira Dickerson (Wilmington, Del.) rounded out the list of female qualifiers after a 2:14.00 performance in the 800-meter run to put her into the BIG EAST Championships.
For the men, senior Dwayne Joseph (Willingboro, N.J.) hit an IC4A mark of 14.75 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish fourth in the preliminaries. He also placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.48 to gain an entry in the BIG EAST’s.
Senior Greg Gomes (Somerset, N.J.) was victorious in his first crack at the 800-meter run this season, hitting a conference qualifying time of 1:53.10. Fellow senior Bryan Burney (Mebane, N.C.) was the third place finisher, and just missed a postseason berth with a time of 1:53.97.
