HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Seton Hall volleyball team won its season opener, 3-1 (20-25, 25-15. 25-23, 25-21), at the Hofstra Tournament. The win marks the first time the Pirates have started the season in the win column since 2003.
Freshman Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) had an outstanding debut, racking up 15 kills and 12 digs. Senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted 13 kills and five blocks, junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) led the defense with 26 digs, and senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) handed out 50 assists.
Seton Hall trailed early in the first set, 10-5, but scored four of the next five points to pull within one. However, the Saints were able to pull away with a 6-1 run and took the frame, 25-20.
Set two began as a back-and-forth battle until the score was knotted at 10-10. A kill by senior Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) sparked a 5-0 spurt to give the Pirates the cushion they needed, and the Hall tied the match.
The Pirates trailed for much of the third set, but were never down by more than two points. Another successful attack from Leisner tied the contest for the 10th time at 17-17. Matusiak served up an ace to give Seton Hall the lead, and the Pirates never looked back, taking the set 25-23.
Two straight attack errors by Siena and a kill by freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) gave the Hall an 11-7 advantage early in the fourth set. The Pirates went up by as many as seven at the 21-14 mark. The Saints managed a rally to pull within three points, but a block from Matusiak and Meyers sealed the win.
Burgandy McCurty led four Siena players in double-figure kills with 18, and Brianne Bobo registered a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs.
Seton Hall will take on Fairfield at 12:30 and Hofstra at 3:30 on Saturday, August 30, to wrap up play at the Hofstra Tournament.
