Volleyball Cruises Past FDU, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall volleyball team snapped a four match losing streak by sweeping Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21), in the Pirates first home match of the season. SHU (3-4) virtually controlled the entire match, surrendering the lead just once in the entire contest.

Senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) led a balanced attack with 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) and sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each posted 12 digs. Senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) dished out 40 assists.

With Osmun serving in the first set, the Pirates went on a 7-1 spurt to take a 9-5 lead. A kill from junior Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas) pushed the advantage to, 22-12, and SHU took the set by the same margin.

The Pirates started the second set on a blazing 12-3 run, and looked poised to put the Knights (5-4) away. FDU pulled within, 21-17, but a kill from Matusiak put the Hall back on track. A few plays later, Rahrer set up Meyers to seal the set.

Freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) put the Pirates up 12-6 in the third set with a kill, however, the Knights fought back to tie the score at 14-14. After trading the next two points, SHU rattled off four straight to regain control as they went on to the victory.

Lauren Boothby had nine kills, and Ali Philbrick recorded 10 digs to lead Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Pirates will wrap up tournament play at the New Hampshire Invitational from September 12-13. SHU will take on Evansville and Rhode Island on Friday, and New Hampshire on Saturday.
