Volleyball Tops Evansville, 3-1

DURHAM, N.H. The Seton Hall volleyball team won a hard fought match to Evansville, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23), to open up the Holly Young Invitational hosted by New Hampshire. The win moves the Pirates back to .500 at 4-4 on the season.

Sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led four players in double-figure kills with 16 for the match, while posting 15 digs. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) notched a career-high 29 digs, and senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had 49 assists.

The Pirates went up 9-5 in the first set on the strength of four kills by freshman Meghan Matusiak (Winfiled, Ill.). A 7-1 run by Evansville (4-6) put the Aces on top 13-11, but SHU stayed close and eventually went ahead 19-18 on a kill from Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.). Evansville was able to regain the lead at 21-20, and held on to take the set.

The Aces got off to a quick start in set two, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. This time the Pirates rallied, scoring eight of the next nine points to go on top, 11-9. Evansville eventually took the lead back, but a service ace and a kill from Osmun gave SHU the 15-14 edge.

A block from Matusiak and freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) extended the cushion to 19-15, and the Pirates went on to tie the match at one.

Set three started out as a close affair, but Thornquist jump-started a 4-0 spurt to give the Hall a 9-6 advantage. The Pirates slowly pulled away, building a 19-14 lead and maintained a comfortable margin, winning the set, 25-18.

Seton Hall held a slim two-point lead in the early stages of the fourth set, but later committed four attack errors, allowing the Aces to take a 15-13 lead. Thornquist helped settle the team down with a kill and a service ace, and two errors from Evansville gave the Pirates a 17-15 lead.

The Aces went on a 5-2 spurt to go on top once again, leading to a see-saw battle between the teams. With the score tied at 23-23, Matusiak gave SHU the lead, and Osmun set up Rahrer for a rare kill to finish the win.

The Pirates will play a pair of matches on Saturday, September 13 to close out the Holly Young Invitational. SHU takes on Rhode Island at 10:00 a.m. and plays New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m.
