Volleyball Downed by NJIT, 3-1

NEWARK, N.J. The Seton Hall volleyball team struggled to get its offense in gear in a 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 25-18) loss to NJIT on Wednesday night. The Pirates (5-6) have not won on the road this season, and have dropped five straight away from South Orange, dating back to last season.

Freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) posted a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had 39 assists and nine digs.

In the first set, Seton Hall led for most of the way, but let NJIT (3-6) stay in the contest by committing attack errors.

SHU bounced back in set two, capitalizing on several Highlander errors to go ahead, 11-5. Red-shirt freshman Rosalina Hanley’s (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) first career kill highlighted a 7-2 spurt to extend the advantage to 17-8 as the Pirates coasted to win the frame, 25-13.

With the score tied, 5-5, in the third set, Seton Hall scored five straight, including a pair aces from senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio). NJIT hung around for a while and eventually took a 20-19 lead.

Hanley came up with a clutch kill and a block effort from Matusiak and Meyers put the Pirates back on top. Two straight attack errors from SHU handed the lead back to the Highlanders and two more errors put NJIT ahead in the match, 2-1.

An 8-1 run gave the Pirates an early 10-6 lead in the fourth set. The Highlanders answered with an 11-1 spurt of their own to go on top, 15-13, slamming the door on SHU’s bid for a comeback.

The Pirates return to Walsh Gym on Friday, September 19, when they take on Lafayette at 6:00 p.m.
