SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall volleyball team swept Lafayette, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-21), pulling its record to 6-6 on the season. The Pirates have now won six consecutive matches in the friendly confines of Walsh Gym.
Freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the team with 14 kills. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) posted nine kills and 12 digs, in her first action at outside hitter this season. Senior Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.) moved to libero in Matters’ place and paced the defense with 15 digs.
SHU and the Leopards (5-8) went back and forth in the first set, but with the score 15-15 the Pirates pulled away with a 10-3 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Pirates got off to a quick start in the second set, going ahead 6-1 off a kill from senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio). With the Pirates still in control, senior Nicole Moser (Danville, Calif.) set up freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) for a spike to extend the advantage, 20-11, as SHU took the frame by ten points.
The third set began much like the first one with the lead changing hands six times. A Pirate service error knotted the score, 17-17, but SHU scored three straight to put the game out of reach to finish the sweep.
Seton Hall returns to action on Sunday, September 21, against Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. The match is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
