SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall men’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to #21 USF on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates (4-4-0, 0-2-0) have now dropped four straight.
The Bulls (4-1-1, 2-0-0) came out strong, taking the lead in the third minute. Kevon Neaves found Jordan Seabrook on the right sideline for a centering pass to Jason Devenish, who blasted the ball past junior SHU keeper Paul McHenry (Ephrata, Pa.) from 12 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
After carrying the one-goal lead into intermission, the Bulls began the second half quickly as well. Yohance Marshall headed in a shot from close range to make it 2-0, with assists credited to Neaves and Seabrook.
The Pirates kept attacking but could not solve USF keeper Jeff Attinella. Midway through the second half, senior Christian Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) ripped a shot from close range on the left side that was stopped by Attinella. Later, sophomore Jerry Saintil (East Orange, N.J.) used an array of beautiful one-on-one moves to work his way in on the left side, but Attinella was once again there to make the save.
SHU finished the day with an 18-14 edge in shots, while USF had a 7-4 advantage in attempts on goal. Sophomores Brayan Martinez (West Orange, N.J.) and Steven Rose (Acton, Mass.) led all players with six shots each. Neaves had four attempts for the Bulls.
McHenry made five saves in net for the Hall, while Attinella was credited with four stops.
The Pirates are back in action on Friday when they travel to Villanova at 4:00 p.m.
