Volleyball Dominates West Virginia in BIG EAST Opener

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall volleyball team topped West Virginia, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) to kick off BIG EAST play on Saturday afternoon. A second set comeback keyed the Pirates (7-7; 1-0 BE) sweep, and extended its home win streak to seven matches.

Senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas), and freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the Hall’s balanced attack with nine kills apiece. Junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) registered 18 digs for the match.

In the first set, the Pirates jumped out to an 8-4 lead, sparked by two kills from Bellomy. The Mountaineers (5-7; 0-1 BE) chipped away, closing within 17-15, but SHU finished strong with a 7-2 run to take the lead in the match.

Three kills from WVU’s Tammy Wolf helped the Mountaineers establish a 9-4 lead in set two. With the Pirates still trailing, freshman Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) caught WVU off guard by spiking home a ball that just cleared the net to make it a two point game at 15-13.

The Mountaineers scored two straight after a timeout to extend the lead back to four. Another kill from Wrobel pulled the Pirates within one at 18-17, but once again WVU rallied to score three consecutive points.

With the score 22-18 in favor of the Mountaineers, Bellomy recorded a kill that started a huge run for SHU. Senior Brittany Rahrer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) served up an ace, and three straight Meyers kills put the Pirates ahead. Another ace from Rahrer and a kill from sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) capped the 7-0 spurt to win the set, 25-22.
