Colgate Tops Volleyball in Close Match, 3-1

DURHAM, N.C. The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped a tough four set match to Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the final game of the Duke Invitational, falling 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, and 25-27.

Colgate led throughout the beginning of the first set, but the Hall managed to stay close and drew to within 16-15 on a kill by sophomore Megan Murison (Woodridge, Ill.).  The Raiders rallied to go ahead 20-15 before the Pirates tied things up on five straight kills by sophomore Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.).  SHU worked its way to a 24-23 lead before Colgate ran off three straight points to steal the set.

Set two was another close affair in the early going, with the Pirates grinding their way to a 14-13 lead.  Seton Hall eventually seized control as three kills by freshman Rachael Thornquist (Crystal Lake, Ill.) propelled it to a 25-19 win, evening the match at one set each.

After falling behind 18-10 in set three, the Pirates used three kills from Osmun and two from freshman Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) to get to within 22-20.  Colgate, however, regrouped to win 25-21 to take a one set lead.

Two service aces from senior Breanna Leisner (Bloomington, Ill.), a pair of kills from Osmun and one from senior Tricia Meyers (Cincinnati, Ohio) helped SHU jump out to a 6-1 lead in set four.  The Raiders cut the lead to 9-8 before Matusiak stemmed the tide with a kill, followed by an ace from freshman Rosalina Hanley (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.) that made it 11-8.

Colgate benefited from several SHU attack errors and assumed a 12-11 advantage.  An Osmun kill gave the Pirates the lead back at 15-14 as the set turned into a see-saw affair.  Colgate began to pull away at 22-18, but kills by Matusiak and Thornquist sandwiched around a Hanley ace brought the Hall back to within one.  After a Colgate point, Thornquist and Murison tied the score at 23 with a pair of kills.  

SHU dodged a pair of match points for Colgate as the match was even at 25, but the Raiders came up with a kill and an ace to close things out in set four.

Osmun had a team-high 23 kills for the Hall to go along with a .327 hitting percentage.  Matusiak was next with 11, while Thornquist added nine kills and five blocks.  Murison recorded a career-high 49 assists, while junior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) had a team-best 22 digs.

The Pirates return to the court in their first home match of the season on Sep. 10 at 7:00 p.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson.
